You Be The Print Judge

Federal Way KFC/A&W

Here we go with an architectural image.  I have always had an interest in architecture and I really enjoy photographing buildings and structures. In fact I have been hoping to make a pilgrimage to Japan to see the Fukuoka Prefectural International Hall designed by Emillio Ambasz, one of my favorite architects.

This image was captured with my Mamiya RZ67 with a Cokin blue gradient filter. The exposure was f 8 @ 1/8 sec. The film was Kodak Portra 400NC. I know I should have used VC but I ran out. I set up about 45 minutes before sunset and shot a couple of images in the rich color of evening but in an image like this one always ends up with a large blue field (too much blank space) or a lot of asphalt. What I was hoping for was the sun to go down and the clouds to catch fire. As the sun set a band of clouds moved in to the west horizon. I got some fire, but not a lot, for about 5 minutes. I used the blue filter to bring the sky into the same exposure range as the building. I have used both neutral gray and blue graduated filters in this situation and found that they do about the same in bringing the sky to a richer blue. but sometimes the blue filter adds a richness to the reds of the clouds.

I really can't say enough about the RZ. When comparing prints made from the 6x7 and the prints made from 35mm film, even with prints as small as 4X5 the difference is real obvious. The sharpness and clarity of prints from the RZ is fabulous. The print quality looks as good as the ones I have done with my 4X5 monorail but I can hand hold the RZ. It is also lighter and easier to pack in and out of more remote places.
