You Be The Print Judge

Mt Rainier  at Sunset

I captured this image in the Connell's Prairie area near Lake Tapps, Washington. As I mentioned in the previous YBTPJ I am trying to incorporate distinct background and foreground elements in my images. This is the third time I have been to this location to photograph the mountain. I wanted a beautiful sunset and I wanted to change the relationship of the mountain to the foreground using the 400mm equivalent to compress the distances. The image below is what I had in mind when I went there.

But then after I got there I saw the cows in the pasture to the right.  So I snuck under the barbed wire and crept across the field. I set myself up in the spot I wanted and watched as the sun went down. The image of the cows I caught just as the last rays of sunlight were shining on the cows and the tops of the grass. It did not translate well in the scanning process. This is a so-so scan from a good print from an excellent transparency.  I think I need a film scanner.

One of the things that I have been doing for the last 6 months is keeping one camera body loaded with print film (Fuji NPS 160 in the case of the road) and another body loaded with transparency film (the cows). I photograph the same scene with both using the same lens. This is helping me to hone my exposures and I can see how my lab is adjusting the color by comparing the color prints against the transparencies.

This image was captured with my Minolta X-700 and Tamron 28-200 with a 2X flat field converter. The exposure was on Fuji Provia 100F transparency film and printed on Fuji Crystal Archive paper and scanned with my desk top scanner. I have temporarily lost my exposure log book so I can't tell you what the exposure was. I really like Provia 100F. It has really good color saturation and very fine grain. The problem is I do not have a local lab that does R type prints. I am looking at trying a lab in another state (a 2 hour drive) but I like to have my lab close enough that I can go down there and yell at them in person (just kidding).
