You Be The Print Judge

200 North Division, Spokane, WA

I have always been attracted to to night lights. When I was a child I really enjoyed the lights of the refineries in the area around San Pedro/Long Beach Ca. To me as a child they were almost magical, The cracking towers, the giant Shell sign, the flares and the man made oil drilling islands were exciting and somehow beautiful.

I seem to have carried this over into adulthood, only I seem to have added neon to my list. I have been photographing neon signs and neon lit scenes more the last couple of years.  When I saw this neon billboard and building next to it I was enraptured.

This image was captured on Provia F with my Minolta X-700 and Tamron 28-200. The exposure was f 11 @ approximately 2 minutes, counted not timed. at about midnight. I bracketed my exposure of course. The one at 2.5 minutes gave a clearer view of the tower and skyline in the background but the cars and foreground was a little more "washed".

Tessaro, Anacortes - 2000

To me it is disappointing to see the industrial lighting go more and more to high pressure sodium lights. There used to be an array of colors but now night scenes are almost a uniform orange. One might as well be photographing in black and white.

SCE, Seal Beach - 1979

Yes I know that sodium lights are more efficient than incandescent or mercury, but what a price to pay.

This is just beautiful, I bet this makes a really, really beautiful large landscape picture. Which I am sure the white geese would show up real nice. Is this one of the pictures you will be showing at the National Compitition?

Actually this is one that I was hoping to send to competition this year but with my schedule being what it is I missed the local and state competitions. I don't have 4 prints  ready for PPA  yet. so it may be included in next years set.
