St. Joseph's Church

St. Joseph's Church

This image was captured in Yakima Washington USA on April 20,2000. I spent a week there attending the International Wall Portrait Conference and one clear morning I captured this image before classes started. I used my trusty Minolta X-700 with my new Tamron 28-200 zoom. I still haven't mastered the adaptall mount when adding or removing the 2x flat-field converter but it is getting easier. I was in a hurry and did not record the exposure.

Saint Joseph's Church burned in 1999 and almost all that remains is the stone walls. It was built in 1903 and I was told that it will be rebuilt as soon as an architect can be found that is right for the job. Arson is suspected.

As a follow up. The church was rebuilt. This picture was taken March 2003. Notice the concrete walls... almost fire proof.

 Good Idea.

I would try to capture this image at another angle, either showing the entire wall (if possible) or the subject(s) in the back.  For now, the subject(s) through the "holes" are not extinguishable.  And the wall itself is not that interesting.

To clarify the concept behind the image:  I was trying to bring the destroyed church together with the cross,  a symbol of death and resurrection. (Jesus answered and said unto them. Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up - John 2:19.) I was hoping that the melted an burned windows would be strong enough to equal the cross in visual strength. I think that if I have to clarify the concept, it was not strong enough. The patterns in the stonework only become apparent on the cropping table, a compositional bonus adding to the flow of the image. Sorry for my reply being two weeks late, wedding season you know.

I would like to Thank Kar Yan Mak for the wonderful idea of a critique page.
